30 DYC Day 4 Pranayama Breathwork
Nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing)
Nadi means energy channel , shodhan means cleaning. Nadi shodhana pranayama helps clear out the blocked energy channels and calms the mind. Nadis can be blocked due to stress, toxin buildup and living an unhealthy lifestyle. Practicing nadi shodhana balances the left and right side of the brain. Another name for this pranayama is Anulom Vilom Pranayama.
Sitting in easy pose, using a block or pillow to raise your hips if needed. Using the right hand, we will be using the thumb to close the right nostril and the ring finger to close the left nostril.Close the right nostril with your thumb and inhale through your left nostril slowly and steady for the count of 8 seconds.Close the left nostril with your ring finger so that both nostrils are held closed for the count of 8 seconds, then open the left nostril and exhale for the count of 8 seconds. Then we start the sequence again inhaling through the left side, holding both sides and exhaling through the right. Focus your awareness on your third eye or heart chakra. You can do this for rounds of 1 to 2 minutes and break then continue for as long as you can. Increasing with time and practice, you can change up the seconds for example: breathing in for the count of 8 and holding for the count of 16.
This practice supports our lungs and respiratory functions, opens and clears out the nadis , rejuvenates the nervous system, removes toxins and reduces stress and anxiety.
