Most people these days experience some sort of back pain and it’s important to be aware of the poses that ask a lot of our back muscles. At the beginning of class it will be important to ask students to be aware of any back issues and to share modifications they can make with specific poses. Camel – or Ustrasana – is very challenging for the back. For those who need modifications, you can invite them to place a couple of blocks between their feet, and as they push their hips forward and reach their chest up and open, they can reach for the blocks instead of their feet. The more they practice this movement, the more their lower back will get used to this posture and they may be able to lower the blocks down over time. Other adjustments for this pose could include placing their hands on their lower back/hips with their fingers facing upward to provide more support for their lower back. It will also be helpful for students to tuck their toes under as well. Another option would be for students to practice next to the wall so there is support for when they push their hips forward.
