HW: Full Length Classes
After completing all the full length classes, I enjoyed the heal your back sequence the most. I felt really relaxed after and definitely felt some relief as I tend to have some tension in my middle back. I also really liked this sequence as I felt that it was planned for all levels and capabilities. I know that some people get intimidated from yoga if they can’t do all the poses or feel they are far behind the rest of the class. I feel like this is a class that many people can enjoy and benefit from. In addition, I feel that many clients through the VA program will appreciate this one as I know many of them have experienced some back pain in their life.
I feel that I really learned a lot from doing this sequence. One thing I learned was what could cause back pain. Whether it is strain caused by muscle imbalances or compression of one of the vertebras, there are yoga poses that help relieve both causes. In addition, it is important to always do counter poses for back stretches. For example, cat and cow could be done together to make sure that your spin is open in all directions. Another example is after doing a seated spinal twist with the bent leg across the straight one, it is important to twist the other way for at least a breath to let your spin release. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the variations that Dashama gave. I know that many people are at different levels and giving variations of difficulty for different poses allow people to practice at their level and not feel that they aren’t supposed to be there. I also learned that opening up and releasing tension in hips will help relieve lower back pain. I learned that it is super important to cue about position of head and shoulders during a back relief sequence. A lot of people tend to have shoulders that roll forward so providing that reminder to have your shoulders down and back are super important. In addition, I have always struggled to cue with blocks, but Dashama demonstrated that so nicely in different poses through the sequence. After doing the sequence, I have a better understanding of how blocks can be used to help people who may need them.
