    HW: Core Training Yoga Sequence

    Wide Leg Circles

(with affirmations to strengthen the Solar Plexus Chakra)

Everything has a core. Every flower, blade of grass, tree trunk, every atom and every person and animal. The sun has a core, even earth itself. The definition of the core is “the central or most important part of something.” The solar plexus chakra, or Manipura, our 3rd chakra, is located in the abdomen, and is the center of our personal power. To be completely ourselves we need a strong core. It is the seat of our souls. It gives us a strong sense of purpose, motivation, and self worth. This chakra governs personal freedom, manifestation, choice and authenticity. As well as ruling our personality, identity, and ego. It also rules our “gut brain” and helps digest emotions and experiences, as well as food.

The color associated with this chakra is yellow and it’s mantra is “i can.” The seed mantra is RAM. It is associated with fire and has masculine energy. It is symbolized by a downward pointing triangle with a ten pointed flower.

When the solar plexus energy is out of alignment or blocked, you can experience physical symptoms such as gastric ulcers, stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, and acid reflux. You can also experience low self esteem, lack of self-trust, a weak will, victim mentality, and excessive need to control. You could also experience irresponsibility, insecurity, and inauthenticity.

Doing core strengthening exercises is just one thing you can do to bring this important chakra into balance.

Today we will be doing Wide Leg Circles. A pose that has roots in Pilates, but incorporates great into any yoga practice, or even works great alone. It is one of my favorite ever exercises for the core. Today we will be combining the move with the power of affirmations to strengthen our solar plexus and core of our being as well as our physical core.

Start by picking an affirmation that centers on your self esteem and purpose. You can write your own or find one you resonate with. Today we will be using the affirmation, “I am enough, just as I am.”

Begin by laying on the floor flat on your back.

Place your hands under your hips for support. Close your eyes to bring your focus inward to your core.

Inhale and rise your legs up.

Exhale and widen your legs and circle them down, about an inch above the ground. And repeat.

As you rise, in your head or out loud, say “I am enough”

As you circle your legs down say, “Just as I am.”

Repeat these wide leg circles and affirmations 5 times.

Then, switch directions, beginning with your legs an inch from the earth, widen your legs and circle around to the top, and then lower back to starting point and repeat.

When you are finished, relax your legs to the ground.

Take a deep breath in, and then out. Imagine a glowing gold ball of energy in your center, radiating self confidence, purpose, and positivity. Know that is who you truly are. And say to yourself “ I am enough. I have always been enough. I will always be enough.”
