The root Chakra is known as Muladhara in Sanskrit and begins developing in utero and throughout our first year of life. This energy is focused on finding safety, building an internal foundation, and being able to ground ourselves. It is located at the base of the spine and is represented by the color red and is associated with the element of Earth. We largely experience this energy as a sense of survival. As a mental health therapist I see many people struggle to be able to feel safe in their own bodies and to be able to ground and calm themselves. Many times my clients have struggled with instability in their early infancy or their mother was experiencing significant challenges while they were in utero. The Root Chakra sets up the foundation for the rest of the Chakra system and thus is very important to learn how to recognize its blockage and methods to clear it. This was the most powerful yoga experience I have had during the program – it was the first time I completed a class and noticed something very different – something I couldn’t completely describe. I think it’s important to bring awareness to participants about this Chakra in particular to and provide a space and sequence that can help clear this channel so they can begin to feel safe in their own space, to feel grounded and less blow about by the challenges and threats (perceived or real) that they encounter. Learning how to feel grounded and safe is building the strong foundation needed to build a life worth living mindfully.
