HW: Chakra Series (Root Chakra)
Chakra: Root /Muladhara
Element: Earth
Bija Sound: Lam
Colour: Red
The Root Chakra – Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine. When balanced, we feel supported, grounded, and stable. It is our foundation, and related to our basic feelings of security, safety, and also affects our ability to cope with challenges. It represents everything solid, the practical aspects of our lives i.e. our basic needs for survival, which means both our basic physical and mental needs. Essentially, the root chakra correlates to how safe we feel.
Its nature aligns with the Earth element – stability and solidity – and is usually represented by the colour red. With this first chakra, we are working on grounding, self-care with attention to the bodily needs – all things in the realm of matter. It can be affected by many things; our food and water, our environment and home, our finances, and the stresses alongside all those things. If all these basic needs are being met, our emotional and spiritual inclination towards feeling safe and releasing fear is much easier, resulting in a balanced root chakra.
In addition to meditation and chanting of the seed mantra, we can support the root chakra with our yoga practice by working to ground down through the legs and feet and consciously connect with the earth as we take standing postures and balance poses.
