  • HW: Chakra Series (1) – Root Chakra

Hi! I loved the Chakra series. In fact, I am planning to study chakra yoga so I can provide classes specifically for healing the chakra centers. I had not even heard of chakras until about ten years ago and I did not understand them until joining YTT. Learning about chakras gave me insight into my own healing journey and how yoga helped me.

The first Chakra, called Muladhara, meaning “root” in Sanskrit, is located at the base of the spine. It is associated with survival and self-preservation and its goal is to provide stability, grounding, support the development of our health, prosperity and trust. This chakra begins to form from about the third trimester to 12 months. Our Muladhara Chakra teaches us about our right to be here.

As you can imagine, when this chakra is unbalanced many issues can arise in our continuing growth and development. For me, it was living in a state of constant fear of my father, never knowing which version of him I would get. It was being forced to move around and never having a place to call home, a place I felt grounded. Even after I left home I continued to move and this became a way of life. When people asked me where I was from, I experienced a lot of anxiety. I was from no where.

Now, I understand that I can ground myself without putting down roots. My journey into yoga has helped balance my root chakra so that I am beginning to heal in other areas as well.

The root chakra is closely associated with the earth element. Going outside and putting your bare feet on the ground can provide an instant grounding relief. Spending time in nature can also help balance the root chakra. Any physical touching, such as massage, can help as well. Many people with an unbalanced root chakra feel disconnected from their bodies. This creates an inability to connect with others as well. I have experienced this first hand. Without yoga, I may never have become aware of this imbalance or understood what was happening within my energy centers.

Some yoga poses that can help with Root Chakra balancing are the Warrior sequences, Goddess pose, Tree Pose, and Chair Pose.

Because food comes from the earth, diet can also help balance this chakra center, especially when adding more root vegetables into your diet.
